About the Cheese Company


All the cheese is made from 100% sheep and goat milk, sea salt, dairy culture, and rennet, and every cheese receives individual care and attention.

We specialize in hand-crafted and hand-packaged artisan sheep and goat cheeses. This cheese tastes as good as it looks, and all these cheeses look beautiful.

Founder David Wood was born in Scotland and grew up in Scotland and England. From there, he came to Canada to work as an environmentalist. Soon he began pursuing his culinary passion and opened the David Wood Food Shop in Toronto. He moved with his family to Salt Spring Island in search of a more relaxed environment.

After six years in development on the farm and in the kitchen, David Wood emerged ready to sell his first cheese. This was in 1997. Since then, all cheeses are still handmade with all-natural ingredients.

The Farm Shop also offers a range of local artisan foods and beverages such as chutneys, jams, crackers, vinegars, honeys, smoked salmon, olives, olive oils, teas, and cordials. When you visit this farm, they have a window into every room so you can watch the entire cheesemaking process all the way through. While there, you can partake in a cheese tasting and enjoy the culmination of all you’ve just seen being made. In addition to watching the cheese being made, you can also go see the animals, wander the farm, and enjoy the scenery. All in all, a day that includes Salt Spring Island Cheese Co. is a day well spent.

During the summer, their café serves sandwiches, pizza, salads, homemade soups, a goat cheesecake, and goat milk gelato.
